ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's volleyball team swept Wilmington (4-19, 0-7) on Saturday afternoon from the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (22-3, 6-1) went 25-8, 25-17, 25-21 against the Fightin' Quakers. On offense, the Raiders were led by senior Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) who had nine kills coming from fellow-comet Riley Schenk's (Lorain/Amherst Steele) 19 assists.
Defensively, Junior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) recorded 12 digs. Blocking for the Raiders were juniors Sabrina Ochoa (North Royalton/Padua Franciscan) and Madison Stacho (Parma/Normandy) who both tabbed two.
First set, the Raiders came out with a 7-1 lead over the Quakers. Powerful hitting made it difficult for Wilmington to etch back into the set as Mount Union gained a 17-point lead. The Raiders would go on to win 25-8.
With a hitting percentage of .429 in set number two, Mount Union was able to gain a lead of 13-4 before Wilmington would start fighting back. Closing in on a lead that was once 11, the Quakers managed to get the set within seven. The Raiders still took the set at 25-17
The Quakers made the third set rather diffcult for the Raiders as they would tie on three separate ocassions. Wilmington would get as close as a two point lead over Mount Union, but it wasn't quite enough as a service ace by freshman Abby Van Horssen (Blacklick/Gahanna Lincoln) would seal the deal with a score of 25-21.
Mount Union will next face the John Carroll Blue Streaks on Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 pm for their last home match of the regular season as well as Senior Night.
