ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's volleyball team defeated John Carroll in three straight sets Tuesday evening on Senior Night from the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (23-3, 7-1), remain among the leaders in the Ohio Athletic Conference to remain in first place as they went 25-8, 25-20 and 25-14 against the Blue Streaks (6-23, 2-6).
There was a strong offensive showing from junior Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) and freshman Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) as they both recorded nine kills each. Senior setter Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) dished out 28 assists to aid in the Raiders hitting percentage of .344.
Jackson and Schenk were leaders on the defensive end as well; Jackson recording four blocks and Schenk tabbing 10 digs. Junior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) also had 10 digs on the night.
Hitting their best in the first set, Mount Union recorded a hitting percentage of .550 to power over John Carroll in a 25-8 victory after gaining a 8-1 lead.
The Blue Streaks would not roll over as they came back fighting in the second set. The Blue Streaks came within four until a series of Raider runs fought off a quick hitting streak for John Carroll. Mount Union remained victorious in a closer battle of 25-20.
Final set of the night, John Carroll kept it tight as the set would tie briefly at six points a piece. Strong blocks and service aces would be the center of a Raider pull-ahead win as the Raiders would top the Blue Streaks 25-14.
Mount Union's final two matches will be Saturday, October 28 in a tri-match against Ohio Wesleyan and host Otterbein. The Raiders will face the Cardinals at 12:00 pm and then the Battling Bishops at 2:00 pm.
