WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's volleyball team splits against Otterbein and Ohio Wesleyan in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (24-4, 7-2) went 23-25, 11-25, 22-25, against the Cardinals (25-3, 8-1). The Raiders were led by freshman Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) and her seven kills, coming from senior Riley Schenk's (Lorain/Amherst Steele) 20 assists. On defense, Mount Union was led by Schenk's 10 digs and and sophomore Marlee Peck's (Homeworth/Marlington) four blocks.
Set one, the Raiders got down quick at 9-13 as the Cardinals were finding lots of gaps. A 14-20 Otterbein lead forced Mount Union into their first time out that resulted in a four point Mount Union rally, keeping it close, but eventually dropped the first set 23-25.
To start the second set, Otterbein got out on top quick with a 10-5 lead over the Raiders. Blocking errors were unkind to the Raiders as they dropped a tough second set 11-25.
Third set, the Raiders and Cardinals kept it close tying through nine. Key blocks from Otterbein earned them a two-point differential. Mount Union kept up a hard fight but lost the final set 22-25. An Otterbein victory led the Cardinals to be the outright first seed for the OAC Tournament.
Against non-conference opponent Ohio Wesleyan (15-8), Mount Union won in four with scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, and 25-18. DiBease and Schenk continued their offensive leadership into the second match of the day as they both recorded nine kills, accompanied by 32 assists from Schenk. Junior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led the way on defense with 19 digs, followed by DiBease who added 18 of her own. Peck contriubted five more blocks as she was joined by junior Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) and senior Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olengtangy Liberty) who both has five blocks as well.
Mount Union is now the third seed going into the OAC Tournament. The Raiders will host the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, October 31st at 7:00 pm in a three-versus-six match up.
