PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Mount Union women's volleyball team improves to 16-0 with the sweep of Bluffton and Elizabethtown (Pa.) during day one of competition at the DoubleTree Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).
An array of Purple Raiders tabbed kills against Bluffton, but leading the charge was sophomore outside hitter Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) with 11 kills. Senior middle Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) was next in line, chipping in 10 kills of her own. Most of those kills came off assists from junior setter Carly Stepic (Cleveland/Holy Name) who tallied 37.
Junior middle hitter Marlee Peck (Homeworth/Marlington) was powerful at the net, racking up a team-high six blocks. Also defending Raider territory was the duo of senior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) and junior defensive specialist Megan Donegan (Dublin/Dublin Coffman). Combining for 24 digs, Baird led with 14 and Donegan had 10.
In game two, freshman outside hitter Kirsten Powell (Strongsville/Strongsville) led the way for the Mount Union offense with 10 kills against Elizabethtown (Pa.). DiBease and Jackson were close behind with eight a piece. Stepic dished out 32 assists and even snagged two kills of her own.
Active on defense, DiBease led the team in digs with 13. Peck returned to head the blockers with three and was accompanied by Jackson and freshman right side Chase Filicko (Olmsted Falls/Gilmour Academy) who additionally had three each.
Mount Union continues play in the DoubleTree Invitational against host-team Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and Mary Washington (Va.) Saturday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
