PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Mount Union's women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches Saturday at the DoubleTree Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).
The Purple Raiders, now 17-1, suffered their first loss of the season to Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) 3-0, but would bounce back to defeat Mary Washington (Va.) 3-2.
Against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), sophomore outside hitter Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) was atop of the attackers with nine kills, followed by junior middle hitter Marlee Peck (Homeworth/Marlington) with eight.
Setting up DiBease, Peck and the rest of the Purple Raider offense was junior setter Carly Stepic (Cleveland/Holy Name) who registered 30 assists.
Senior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) and sophomore defensive specialist Annie Leslein (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) tabbed double digit digs with 17 and 10, respectively. At the net, senior middle blocker Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) tied for her then season best of four blocks against the Tartans.
Mary Washington (Va.) struck first in the second match of the day. However, Mount Union would push it to five sets, winning the last two back-to-back to seal the win. Sophomore outside hitter Breanna Arnett (Peninsula/Woodridge) led the offense with 14 kills, tying for a career-best. Also in double figures on the attack was Jackson with 12. Stepic too would meet her career-high with 44 assists.
Defending for the Raiders, Baird dug 21 balls and Jackson surpassed her performance from game one for a season-high nine blocks.
Mount Union returns home and begins Ohio Athletic Conference action against Otterbein (10-4) on Saturday, September 29 at 1:00 p.m.
