UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Mount Union's women's volleyball team defeated John Carroll (10-8, 0-3 OAC) 3-1 Tuesday night from the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
For the Purple Raiders (18-2, 1-1 OAC), three hitters logged season-bests and double digit kills. Sophomore outside hitter Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) led the way with 16, freshman right side Maria Ellesin (Alliance/Marlington) had 15 and freshman outside hitter Kirsten Powell (Strongsville/Strongsville) tabbed 13.
Most of those kills came off assists from junior setter Carly Stepic (Cleveland/Holy Name) who hit a career-high mark of 48 assists.
Defensively, Mount Union was led by senior libero Allison Baird's (North Royalton/North Royalton) 13 digs. DiBease also defended with the back row alongside Annie Leslein (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) as they each logged 11 digs a piece. At the net, senior middle blocker Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) led the team with eight.
The Blue Streaks were led by Cassi Calamunci's 17 kills.
John Carroll would hold a three point lead over Mount Union after tying twice at 6-6 and 13-13. Mount Union tried to close in as they only trailed 24-23, but ultimately John Carroll would notch the final point at 25-23.
Mount Union then went on to win the next three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16 despite John Carroll starting each set with the lead. A collection of runs proved to be the key to Mount Union's offense. After topping John Carroll, the Raiders would never let them regain the lead in any of their final sets.
Continuing conference play, Mount Union next heads to Wilmington, Ohio on Saturday, October 6 for a match against Wilmington starting at 3:00 p.m.
