PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Mount Union women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Carnegie Mellon Doubletree Invitational.
The Purple Raiders (9-3) defeated Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) (1-8) in the first match 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.
Against Washington and Jefferson, the Raiders were led offensively by junior Madelin DiBease (Perry) with 11 kills, followed by sophomore Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) with 10. Setting up for these kills were freshman Mollie Thomas (Masillion) and Katie May (Independence) with 11 and 10 assists a piece. Defensively, freshman Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) tallied 14 digs, while senior Marlee Peck (Homeworth / Marlington) added four blocks.
No. 13 Hope (6-2) struck first winning the first match, but the Raiders bounced back winning the second. Unfortunately, that would be the only set won by Mount Union losing the match 25-15, 26-24, 26-24, 25-14.
Leading Mount Union in this match was DiBease with 10 kills, May with 16 assists, and Kasaris with 15 digs.
The Raiders continue play at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Saturday, September 14 with two matches against Scranton (Pa.) and Susquehanna (Pa.) at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
