ALLIANCE, Ohio - Mount Union's women's volleyball team fell to Heidelberg in four sets in an Ohio Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium.
It was the final regular season home match for seniors Marleee Peck (Homeworth / Marlington), Megan Donegan (Dublin / Dublin Coffman), Carly Stepic (Parma / Holy Name) and Bethany Matuska (Pickerington / Bishop Hartley) and the loss dropped the Purple Raiders record to 20-7 overall and 5-2 in the OAC.
Offensively, Mount Union had three Raiders with double digit kills as junior Breanna Arnett (Peninsula / Woodridge) had 13, while Peck and sophomore Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) each had 10 kills.
Heidelberg (21-5, 5-2 OAC) was led by Taylor Valentine with 15 kills.
Heidelberg started the first set gaining the lead 4-0 and the Student Princes never lost that lead winning the set, 25-13.
In set two, Heidelberg started with a 9-3 run. Mount Union fought back with kills from Arnett and Ellesin to close the gap 15-11. The Raiders continued their fight and tied the score up at 23. A kill by Ellesin and a Heidelberg error gave Mount Union the set, 25-23.
As history would repeat itself, the Student Princes would take an early lead 5-3. The Raiders scored five consecutive points to regain the lead 8-5. Heidelberg scored a quick three points to tie it 8-8, then went on a 8-2 run to take the lead 16-10. Mount Union was unable to recover losing this set 25-21.
Mount Union came out in the fourth set with 10-3 run. Heidelberg fought back slowly tying the score up at 20-20. The Student Princes went on to score their last five points, winning the set and the match 25-23.
Mount Union closes out the regular season on the road playing at Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and at Ohio Northern at Saturday, Nov. 2.
