Women's Volleyball: Raiders Season Stopped in OAC Quarterfinals

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - No. 6 seed Mount Union saw its season end with a 3-1 loss at No. 3 seed Otterbein in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament Tuesday at The Rike Center.  

The Purple Raiders were led offensively by sophomore Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) with a career-high 17 kills while feshman setter Katie May (Independence) added 22 assists. 

Freshman libero Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) recorded a team-high 17 digs and Ellesin tallied three blocks.

Otterbein (24-5, 7-2 OAC) was led by Emily Shuk with 16 kills and Ashlyn Leon with 23 digs.

Mount Union started the first set with a 5-3 lead. The lead was short lived as Otterbein went on 6-2 run taking the 9-6 lead, but Mount Union eventually rallied to tie the score 23-23 and kills from Ellesin and May gave the Raiders the first set 25-23. 

Otterbein took a quick 6-4 lead in set two. The Raiders went on a 5-1 run gaining a 9-7 lead, but the Cardinals fought back tying the score at 14-14 before regaining the lead 16-14. They never looked back going on a 9-5 run, winning the set 25-19.

In set three, the Raiders grabbed the lead 3-2 to start. Otterbein went on a 6-1 run taking their first lead of the set 8-4. The Cardinals continued to extended their lead 18-8, before finishing out the set with a 7-3 run, winning 25-11.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-2 lead to start the fourth set. Mount Union rallied back tying the score at 6-6 and again at 8-8, before Otterbein regained the lead 11-8. The Raiders went on a 5-0 run and making the score 13-11. Otterbein refused to roll over tying the score at 16-16. With two quick points, the Cardinals regained control 18-16 and continued on to win the set 25-18.

Mount Union concludes the 2019 season with an overall record of 20-10 and a conference record of 5-4.
