The Purple Raiders are coming off an impressive third place finish at the Wheaton/Pete Willson Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. NCAA Division II member Wisconsin-Parkside won the event followed by No. 7 ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. Nine of the 30 ranked NCAA Division III teams were at the tournament.
John Carroll was also at Wheaton and the Blue Streaks finished 11th.
Six Mount Union wrestlers placed led by senior Derick Hesson (Dexter City/Caldwell) who had the fastest pin (16 seconds) on his way to winning the 285-pound title.
Senior Josh Malave (Rocky River/Lutheran West) finished third at 141, senior Kevin Shadrach (Parma/Parma) placed fifth at 149, senior Andy Jenkins(Stow/Woodridge) was sixth at 184 and senior John Piechuta (Alliance/Marlington) and junior TJ Arnone (Willoughby/Willoughby South) each placed eighth at 165 and 133 to round out Mount Union's placewinners.
For John Carroll, senior Sean Gill placed fifth at 165, freshman Terner Gott was sixth at 157 while junior John Cobos at 125 and senior James Nemunaitis at 197 each finished seventh.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Mount Union seniors Derick Hesson and Josh Malave are both in the national rankings. Hesson is No. 2 in the nation at 285 while Malave is No. 9 at 141.
CENTURY CLUB
Hesson also reached elite company this past weekend as his win in the finals at Wheaton gave him 100 wins on his career. Hesson is only the third Mount Union wrestler ever to win over 100 matches. Hesson enters today's match with a 100-32 record.
