Men's Swimming & Diving Earns Narrow Victory Over Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla.—The Mount Union men's swimming and diving team captured a 137-120 victory over Florida Tech Wednesday afternoon. This was the first competition in almost a month for the Purple Raiders, who traveled to Florida for the final week of winter break.

The Purple Raiders only won five of the 14 events, but used ten second place finishes to improve to 4-2 in dual meets on the season.

Rob Brocious (Mentor/Mentor) was the only team member to win multiple events, touching first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.58) and 200 yard IM (2:05.03). Brocious finished second in the 200 yard backstroke.

Nick Bester (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and Mike Zappa (Shelby/Shelby) also took first place in events. Bester won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.53 while Zappa's 2:11.48 was good enough to win the 200 yard butterfly.

Zappa was joined by sophomore Austin Moreland (Dover/New Philadelphia), sophomore Zach Melvin (Woodmere/Orange), junior Mike Greisl (South Euclid/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) to win the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:05.03.

The Purple Raiders will return to the pool when they travel to Ohio Northern on Saturday, January 14th.
