ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's swimming and diving team defeated Hiram, 173-111, in their home opener on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the way for the Purple Raiders was senior Shelbey Mitchell (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and sophomore Jessica Swanson (Uniontown/Lake). The duo each won a pair of events for Mount Union.
Mitchell won the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.87) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.50). Swanson swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 1:12.80 and 2:39.22.
Others placing first in their events were Rose Aldo (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.33), Caroline Buehl (Middleburg Heights/Berea) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:31.51) and Kaitlyn Goldsmith (Galloway/Hilliard Bradley) in the 50-yard freestyle (26.29).
In relay action, the 400-yard medley relay team of Mitchell, Swanson, Carly Brown (Strongsville/Strongsville), and Goldsmith took first place with a time of 4:20.77.
Mount Union (2-0) will return to the pool on Saturday, November 2 at 1 pm for a conference meet with Defiance at Mount Union.
