ALLIANCE, Ohio -- No. 6 ranked in NCAA Division III Mount Union put up a fight against No. 14 ranked in NCAA Division II Ashland but the Eagles left the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex Tuesday with the win, 28-12.
Junior Seth Hayes (Ravenna/Rootstown) started the Purple Raiders off with a victory at 125 pounds in an 8-1 decision over Dan Morell.
Ashland went on to win the next three matches before junior Kyle Jenkins (Stow) secured a pin at 157 pounds after trailing Ashland's Gavin Garica by as much as 11 points in the third period.
Later at 197 pounds, sophomore George Lassnick (Painesville/Lake Catholic) also collected a come-from-behind win in a 14-10 decision against Peter Abraham.
With the win, Ashland improves to 7-1 overall as Mount Union is now 13-3 on the season.
The Raiders next compete at the Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester University (Ind.) Saturday, January 12.
