ALLIANCE, Ohio – Four Mount Union pitchers combined to shutout Thiel (Pa.), 7-0, in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday at Rafeld-Rogers Field.
The Purple Raiders (8-6) combined to scatter seven hits and strikeout 11 Tomcats (4-5). Carson Davis (Louisville) went the first four innings and picked up his second win of the season. Ryan Osman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon), Dan Zelina (Mentor) and Cole Robinson (Lewis Center / Olentangy) allowed only three hits over the last five innings.
On offense, Mount Union manufactured a run in the first inning with runners at the corners and two outs, Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) stole second then Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) took off from third base and scored to make it 1-0.
The Raiders continued to manufacture runs in the third on an RBI-ground out from Andrew Mekeal (Cuyahoga Falls / Woodridge) and a sacrifice fly RBI from Brian Livolsi (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) to push the score to 3-0.
Mazza hit a solo home run in the fourth then drove in two more with a triple in the eighth which gave Mount Union a 6-0 lead. Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) then brought Mazza home with a double in the eighth to make it 7-0.
Mazza drove in three runs on three hits and Duliba had three hits.
Mount Union next opens Ohio Athletic Conference play hosting Heidelberg in a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rafeld-Rogers Field in Alliance.
