ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team won a mid-week slugfest with Oberlin, 14-9, Wednesday at Rafeld-Rogers Field.
The teams combined for 23 runs on 28 hits but it was the Purple Raiders (11-6) who used a six-run first inning to build an early lead.
Oberlin (4-10) rallied cutting the deficit in half with a three-run second inning, but Mount Union scored three more runs in the bottom of the second and led 9-3.
The Yeomen rallied again with a four-run fourth to close the gap to 9-7.
The Raiders again got another big inning to give them some breathing room with a five-run sixth inning, with the big hit coming on a three-run home run from Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) to make it 14-7.
Oberlin scored two in the eighth and brought the tying run to the on-deck circle before Mount Union shut the door and finished with the 14-9 final.
The Mount Union offense was paced by Mazza and Chad Szydlowski (Twinsburg), who each drove in three runs, Chase Angotti (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) had two RBI and Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) had three hits and drove in a run.
Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play against Ohio Northern Saturday at 1 p.m. in Ada.
