Raiders Sweep John Carroll in OAC Play

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team swept John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday evening, winning game one 16-3 and winning game two 12-6.

The Purple Raiders (15-8, 6-2 OAC) struck first in game one when senior Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) hit an RBI double that scored junior Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Raiders would add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring seven runs, with RBIs coming from seniors Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial), Coleman Stauffer (Boardman), Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa.), Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) and junior Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) to take an 8-0 lead. Mount Union would extend their lead in the sixth inning, adding three more runs with RBIs coming from Marlowe, Stauffer and sophomore Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway).

The Raiders scored three more runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning, the first run came off a solo homerun by Mazza, the next two runs came off RBIs from Weaver and Schilling to extend their lead to 14-0.

The Blue Streaks (11-13, 5-3 OAC) scored two runs in the top of the eighth coming off a two RBI double from Benjamin Surman to cut the lead to 14-2. Mount Union added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning with RBIs coming from Mazza and Duliba.

John Carroll scored again in the top of the ninth inning off a solo homerun from Erik Daugenti, but Mount Union would go on to win 16-3.

The Raiders finished with 18 hits in the game and had six players with multiple hits.

Senior Carson Davis (Louisville) got the start on the mound for Mount Union and gave up just two runs on nine hits and struck out six in eight innings. Senior Collin Skufca (Wooster) came in and pitched the final inning in relief and gave up one run on two hits.

Mount Union scored first again in game two when Mazza scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Streaks would tie the game at one in the top of the third inning coming off an RBI from Joe Olsavsky. The Raiders would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs with RBIs coming from Weaver, Schilling and Lehman.

John Carroll would answer in top of the fourth when Connor Mayle hit a two RBI double to trim the lead down to 4-3. Mount Union would extend their lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs, the first came off an RBI single from Mazza and the second came after senior Brian Livolsi (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) flew out to center field and junior Chase Angotti (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) scored to take a 6-3 lead. Gallant hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning to add to the Mount Union lead.

The Blue Streaks would answer with a homerun of their own in the top half of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-4. The Raiders would score one run in the sixth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth to add to their lead. Livolsi hit a sacrifice fly that scored the run in the sixth inning, then Lehman scored on a wild pitch and Duliba hit a two RBI single in the seventh inning. Lehman would then hit an RBI single in the eighth extending the Mount Union lead to 12-4. John Carroll would score two more runs in the top of the ninth, but the Raiders would go on to win 12-6.

Freshman Chris Phillips (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) made his first career start for Mount Union and gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out six in six innings pitched. Sophomore Chuck Hawley (Mentor) came in and pitched two innings of relief giving up zero runs on just two hits and striking out two. Junior Jeremy Sassano (Fairview Park / Fairview) came in to pitch the final inning and gave up two runs on two hits.

The Raiders hit the road next to take on Wilmington on Friday, April 15 for an OAC doubleheader, with game one starting at 1 p.m. and game two following at 4 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio.
