Raiders Sweep Capital at Home

Sumler Throws Career-High 14 Strikeouts

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team swept Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, winning game one 9-6 and taking game two 12-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (19-14, 10-6 OAC) struck first in game one with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first run came off an RBI by senior Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) that score senior Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark). Then, junior Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) hit an RBI single that brought home senior Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve), then senior Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) hit an RBI double that scored Schilling.

Mount Union would add to their lead in the second inning when Duliba hit an RBI single that brought home sophomore Andrew Witte (Mentor) to take a 4-0 lead. The Comets (10-27, 2-14 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning when Connor Feeney reached first on a fielder's choice and Brandon Barnette scored.
Capital would then tie the game in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs. The first run came off an RBI from Logan White, then Brendan Stinson hit a two RBI single to tie the game at four. The Comets would take their first lead of the game when CJ Rockwell hit a two-run home run to take a 6-4 lead.

The Raiders would tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring two runs, the first came off an RBI single from senior Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa.) brought home Schilling. The second run came off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Andrew Mekeal (Cuyahoga Falls / Woodridge) that brought home Stauffer. Mount Union would then reclaim the lead in the eighth inning with three runs with RBIs coming from Marlow and Schilling giving the Raiders a 8-6 victory.

Senior Carson Davis (Louisville) got the start on the mount for Mount Union and gave up six runs on six hits while striking out five in five innings. Senior Ryan Osman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon) would come in to pitch the final four innings in relief giving up zero runs on two hits and striking out five.

In game two the Raiders finished with 14 hits, with senior Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) going 3-of-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Duliba going 4-of-4 with a double and three RBIs.

The Comets would strike first in game two when Barnette hit an RBI single that scored Cole Callaghan to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would tie the game in the bottom of the first inning when Schilling hit an RBI that scored Mazza.

The Raiders would then take the lead with two runs in the third inning the first coming off a sacrifice fly from Duliba that scored Witte, then Schilling hit an RBI single that scored Mazza. Mount Union would add to their lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. The first came off a two RBI single from Witte that scored Stauffer and Weaver, then Mazza hit a two-run home run to take a 7-1 lead. The Raiders would extend their lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four more runs with RBIs coming from sophomore Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway), Witte and Duliba. Mount Union's final run of the game came in the seventh inning off an RBI single from Duliba and would go on to win 12-1.

Senior Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) got the start in game two for Mount Union and gave up just one run on two hits, while striking out a career-high 14 in 7.1 innings. Gallant would come in and pitch 0.2 innings of relief giving up zero runs on zero hits. Junior Jeremy Sassano (Fairview Park / Fairview) came in to pitch the final inning and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out two.

The Raiders return to action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader against Hiram, with game one starting at 1 p.m. and game two following at 4 p.m. at Rafeld-Rogers Field in Alliance.
