MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team split a pair of games in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, beating Otterbein 14-4 and falling to Baldwin Wallace 13-5 on Friday.
The Purple Raiders (23-19, 11-7 OAC) finished the game with 19 hits as a team, senior
Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) finished with a career-high five hits to lead the Raiders offensively, senior
Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa.) finished the game 3-of-5 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs.
Mount Union struck first against Otterbein (28-14, 14-4 OAC) with two runs in the top of the first inning coming off a two RBI single from senior
Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) that brought home junior
Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) and Marlowe to take a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders would add to their lead in the top half of the second with five runs, the first three came off a three-run home run from junior
Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic). Then, Marlowe scored after he stole third and there was a throwing error by the Cardinals' catcher, the final run of the inning came after Schilling scored on a wild pitch.
Mount Union added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning coming off a three-run home run from Weaver and then sophomore
Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) scored on a wild pitch to take an 11-0 lead. The Raiders would add another run in the top half of the seventh when senior
Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) hit an RBI single to bring home Marlowe.
The Cardinals would cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, the first coming off and RBI double from Jamie Perebzak. The next two runs would come off RBI singles from Zach Franz and Noah Sprowls to cut the lead to 12-3. Mount Union would get the lead back up to 10 in the top of the eighth inning when Weaver scored on a wild pitch.
The Raiders added to the lead again in the top of the ninth when Schilling hit an RBI single that scored Marlowe to increase the lead to 14-3. Otterbein would score a run in the bottom half of the inning when Sam Edgell hit a solo home run, but it wouldn't be enough as Mount Union would go on to win 14-4.
Senior
Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) got the start on the hill for the Raiders and gave up three runs on four hits while striking out eight in 7.1 innings of work. Senior
Ryan Osman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon) would come in to pitch the final 1.1 innings giving up one run on three hits and striking out one.
The win advanced Mount Union in the OAC Tournament where they would take on Baldwin Wallace in an elimination game.
The Yellow Jackets (32-10, 12-5 OAC) would strike first in the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first run came after Luke Vonderhaar scored on a Mount Union error. The second came off an RBI single from Ryan Guggenheim to take a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders would answer with a run of their own in the top of the third inning when senior
Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) hit an RBI single that brought home Lehman. Baldwin Wallace would add to their lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs with RBIs coming from Guggenheim, Sean Kolenich and Mark Mohnickey to take a 6-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets would score three more runs in the fourth inning to add to their lead, the first came off an RBI double from Vonderhaar then Vonderhaar scored after a Mount Union error. The final run of the inning came off an RBI from Andrew Parker.
Mount Union would answer with two runs in the top of the fifth, the first came off an RBI from Mazza that brought home Weaver. Then, Duliba hit an RBI single to score Lehman to cut the Baldwin Wallace lead to 9-3. Baldwin Wallace would answer with a run in the bottom half of the inning coming off a solo home run from Vincent Capolupo.
The Yellow Jackets would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, coming off a three-run home run from Guggenheim to extend their lead to 13-3. The Raiders would cut into the lead in the top half of the seventh when Marlowe hit an RBI single that brought home Mazza, then Duliba scored on a double play ball to cut the lead to 13-5. Mount Union wasn't able to get any closer as Baldwin Wallace would go on to win 13-5.
Gallant got the start on the mound for the Raiders, giving up eight runs, five earned on seven hits and striking out four in three innings. Osman came in to pitch 2.1 innings of relief and gave up five runs on five hits and struck out one. Freshman
Nate Martin (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) came in to pitch the final 2.2 innings for Mount Union giving up zero runs on one hit and striking out two.
The Raiders finish the season 23-19 overall and went 11-7 in OAC play.
