NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team scored a season-high 17 runs in a 17-3 win at Muskingum Sunday. The Purple Raiders lost the night cap 8-4 to split the final two games of the regular season.
It was the 10th time in 22 wins this season that the Raiders scored in double digits and this game they ran out to a 15-1 lead after five innings scoring three in the first and third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth. They tacked on single runs in the seventh and the ninth in between two Muskie runs in the eighth for the 17-3 final.
Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) and Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) each drove in four runs, Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) drove in three and Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) and Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) each hit in two to all pace the Mount Union offense.
Gallant improved to 7-2 on the mound as he scattered one run on four hits and struck out seven over the first 6.0 innings.
Muskingum (15-23) had a six-run third inning in game two to take an 8-1 lead then held off the Raiders, who scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth before the 8-4 final.
Gallant was 3-of-5 at the plate as the designated hitter to lead the Mount Union offense.
Mount Union finishes the regular season 22-17 overall and at 11-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, will be the No. 4 seed in next week's OAC Tournament.
The Raiders will play regular season champ and No. 1 nationally ranked Marietta in the first round Thursday, May 12 at a time to be announced. The other teams in the double-elimination tournament being held at Marietta are No. 2 seed Otterbein and No. 3 seed Baldwin-Wallace.
