ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union baseball team swept Muskingum at home in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader to conclude its regular season conference schedule on Friday.
Mount Union (26-13, 10-8 OAC) came back and won game one, 11-3, and finished with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, the Raiders were down 3-0 before scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Mount added six more runs in the next two innings for a dominant 11-3 win. Freshman
Luke Ickes (Green, Ohio / Green) led the offensive charge with five RBIs, going 3 for 5, two runs scored, and a triple. Junior
Zachary Breeden (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Elder) improved to 5-3 on the mound, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up three earned runs off 10 hits and striking out five. Junior
Brady Hansen (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) earned the save with 2.1 hitless innings and striking out one.
In game two, Mount Union had an early 4-0 lead after two innings, however, Muskingum (19-19, 7-11 OAC) tied it in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the eighth. Junior
Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla. / Coral Gables) crossed home plate for the go-ahead run and junior
Joe Lenart (Cleveland, Ohio / Garfield Heights) followed with a two-run single for insurance runs. Sophomore
Leo Fornara (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) improved to 6-2 on the year, throwing 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off three hits and struck out three. Hansen came in again to clinch the Purple Raider win for his third save on the season, only giving up one run off three hits in two innings of work, while striking out two. Freshman
Chase Mayer (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) had two impressive innings of relief, only allowing one hit and striking out six.
Mount Union will close out its regular season on Sunday, May 5 with a single non-conference game at Penn State Behrend at 1 p.m.
