The Mount Union baseball team (6-6) won their home opener at Rafeld-Rogers Field against the Penn State Behrend Lions (8-5) with a 14-6 victory. The offense for the Purple Raiders started the game blistering hot and did not let their foot off of the pedal.
In the first inning, Mount Union scored three runs, highlighted by a two-run RBI single from junior right fielder Chris Tsouras (Las Vegas, Nevada / Arbor). Tsouras has recorded eight hits in his last five games. In the second inning, the Purple Raiders continued their offensive surge, adding five runs to their tally. This inning featured a deep two-RBI double to center field by senior shortstop Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark). Stegman had a stellar performance, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a hit-by-pitch, and driving in three RBIs.
Mount Union went on to score four more runs in the game. Junior pitcher Angel Mediavilla (Hialeah, FL / Imater Charter) earned his first win as a Purple Raider in a solid start, throwing 4.2 innings with six strikeouts. Junior pitcher Anthony Warner (Louisville, Ohio / Louisville) did an excellent job in relief, pitching 4.1 innings, and earning the save. He recorded two strikeouts, did not allow any runs, and gave up just one hit.Â
Mount Union's upcoming game will be against Marietta College in a doubleheader on the road.Â
