Baseball: Purple Raiders Stay Red-Hot, Top Westminster 12-6

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The #23 nationally ranked Mount Union baseball team (26-8) won a non-conference game against Westminster College (16-19) on the road on Monday. The Purple Raiders have won 22 out of their last 24 games.

On the mound, junior right-handed pitcher Anthony Warner (Louisville, Ohio / Louisville) made the start, pitching a strong 5.1 innings of work with three strikeouts, allowing three runs, with only two being earned.

The scoring started early for Mount Union, as senior shortstop Alex Stegman (Berea, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning. On the day, Stegman batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Westminster took a 2-1 lead, but the Purple Raiders responded by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Graduate first baseman Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) opened the inning with an RBI single. Senior designated hitter Johnny Costella (Cleveland, Ohio / Trinity) followed up with a powerful bases-clearing double, driving in three runs. Then, senior third baseman Chris Viamonte (Miami, FL. / Coral Gables) contributed with an opposite-field RBI single to the right side. Viamonte had an impressive day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI, two walks, and two stolen bases, which marked his 17th and 18th stolen bases of the season.

Westminster temporarily tied the game at the bottom of the sixth inning, but Mount Union quickly responded to the challenge at the top of the seventh inning. Stegman began the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly. Then, junior outfielder Chris Tsouras (Las Vegas, Nev. / Arbor) hit an RBI single through the right side, marking his team-leading 46th RBI. Following this, Lehman delivered an RBI double, recording his 15th double of the season and securing his 35th RBI. Freshman catcher Daniel Thome III (Lakewood, Ohio / St. Edwards) contributed with another RBI sacrifice fly to end the inning, giving the Purple Raiders a 10-6 lead.

Mount Union scored two additional runs in the top of the ninth inning, as Tsouras and Lehman both recorded RBI groundouts, raising Tsouras'sRBI total to 47 and Lehman's to 36.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Christopher Maurer (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) earned his third win of the season, pitching 3.2 innings of work, recording four strikeouts while allowing three runs, securing the 12-6 win.

Mount Union's next game will be Thursday on the road at Washington & Jefferson College, as the teams will meet for an out-of-conference matchup for the third time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
