WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Mount Union men's tennis team, under the guidance of first-year head coach Ryan McClure, won its season opener with a convincing 6-1 win at Washington and Jefferson on Monday.
Senior Elliott Warner (New Philadelphia / New Philadelphia) and sophomore Nick Sziraky (Uniontown / Green) shut out their opponent at no. 1 doubles (6-0). The Raiders secured the doubles point as junior Andrew Cavett (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) and freshman Carson Arfaras (Canfield / Canfield) won no. 2 doubles 7-5.
Warner won no. 1 singles, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, while Sziraky won no. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Also earning singles wins were Cavett, junior Jacob Timonere (Ashtabula / St. John), and freshman Gabe McDade-Povick (Dover / Dover).
The Purple Raiders will next host Indiana University East on Saturday, September 20, at 1 p.m.
