INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Mount Union baseball team swept a Sunday doubleheader against Alfred State, winning 12-0 and 11-1, to complete a season-opening three-game series sweep over the Pioneers.
The Purple Raiders improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 0-3.
Game One: Mount Union 12, Alfred State 0
In the first game of the day, junior
Luke Ickes set the tone on the mound, tossing six dominant innings of three-hit ball to earn the first win of his career. Ickes struck out five and did not allow a run before handing the ball to classmate
Drew Gernert, who threw 3.0 innings of one-hit relief to secure the save.
Offensively, Mount Union broke the game open in the second with a three-run surge, highlighted by a two-RBI double from
Drew Denham.
Denham finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles.
Brycen Fox also had a productive opener, scoring three runs and stealing two bases, while
Aaron Tucker added a triple. The Raiders benefited from defensive miscues by the Pioneers, who committed six errors in the contest.
Game Two: Mount Union 11, Alfred State 1
The nightcap saw much of the same as game one, as the Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Daniel Tome III delivered an RBI double, and Denham drove in two more to highlight the early offensive surge.
The lead grew to 6-0 in the second before a five-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. Tucker provided insurance runs in the fifth with a two-RBI double to deep left-center.
On the mound,
Anthony Warner allowed only three hits over six scoreless innings while striking out three.
Ryan Romito finished the game with two perfect innings of relief, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
Fox continued his hot start to the season, going 2-for-5 with a triple and two more stolen bases, bringing his total to five on the weekend. Alfred State avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh, but the Raiders' pitching staff limited them to just five hits.
Mount Union travels to Fayetteville, N.C., next weekend for the Armstrong Invitational hosted by Methodist University. The Raiders are scheduled to play a doubleheader against Hobart on Saturday, Feb. 21, starting at 11 a.m.
