Baseball: Dennison Deals Gem as Mount Union Blanks Anderson 7–0 in Florida Opener

WINTER HAVEN, Florida - The Mount Union baseball team kicked off its Florida road trip with a 7-0 shutout victory against Anderson University. Junior right-handed pitcher Ty Dennison (Hudson, OH/Hudson) delivered a dominant performance, throwing 7.0 shutout innings while allowing just three hits and one walk. He also tallied an impressive 10 strikeouts. 

Freshman catcher Jake Jung ignited the scoring for the Purple Raiders with an RBI double to deep left center field. This opportunity was created by a single and a stolen base from junior Trevor Szekely  (Canal Fulton, OH / Northwest), who put himself in scoring position. Mount Union continued to dominate in the third inning, scoring three runs. Junior third baseman Drew Denham (Alliance, OH / Marlington) contributed with a two-RBI double to left-center field. Szekely added the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, giving the Purple Raiders a 4-0 lead. 

In the sixth inning, Szekely led off with a double and later scored on an error, contributing to a strong performance where he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the eighth inning, Mount Union added two more insurance runs. Junior outfielder Brycen Fox (Hamilton, OH / Badin) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, finishing the game with an impressive 3-for-4 performance and an RBI. Junior outfielder Luke Ickes (Green, Ohio / Green) then capped off the inning with an RBI single up the middle. 

Junior right-handed pitcher Drew Gernert (Mequon, WI / Homestead) concluded the game for the Purple Raiders, tossing the final 2.0 innings, allowing no runs and recording three strikeouts. 

The Purple Raiders play tomorrow morning in their second game of the team's Florida trip against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 10:00 AM at Lake Myrtle's main field in Auburndale, Florida.
