The Mount Union baseball team (10-2) defeated Hope College (4-8) with a score of 16-3 in a game that lasted seven innings. The Purple Raiders' offense dominated throughout the game. On the mound, senior right-handed pitcher Anthony Warner (Louisville, OH / Louisville) contributed by pitching 4.2 innings, striking out two batters, and allowing only one run to the Dutchmen. The standout offensive performer for Mount Union was junior Trevor Szekely (Canal Fulton, OH / Northwest), who went 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting a double and a home run, and fell just a triple short of completing the cycle.
In the first inning, the Purple Raiders scored seven runs. This included two runs from errors and one run from a passed ball. The highlights of the inning were when the sophomore first baseman Aaron Tucker (Alliance, OH / West Branch) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, earning him an RBI. Then, junior outfielder Brycen Fox (Hamilton, OH / Badin) contributed with a two-RBI single down the left field line. Fox reached base three times during the game and has successfully reached base in every game this season.
In the second inning, Mount Union added four more runs. Senior outfielder Chris Tsouras (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor) hit a powerful RBI double to right-center field. Szekely continued his impressive performance by hitting a two-run home run to right field, marking the first of his college career. The Raiders also capitalized on an error by Hope, contributing to the six errors made by Hope in the game.
The Dutchmen scored one run in the third inning when outfielder Connor Lavery hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield. However, the Purple Raiders responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Szekely and Tucker each contributed with sacrifice flies, and Tsouras scored on a wild pitch.
Junior right-handed pitcher Ian Blood (Massillon, OH / Jackson) earned his first win of the season out of the bullpen, pitching 1.1 innings with two strikeouts, allowing one run. In the bottom of the fifth, the Purple Raiders added two more runs as Fox scored on an error and sophomore infielder
