WILMINGTON, Ohio -- The No. 13 nationally ranked Mount Union baseball team (21-4) swept the Wilmington Quakers (0-21) to improve to 6-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
The Purple Raiders scored 34 runs across the two games, with the offense on full display, hitting four home runs.
In game one, junior right-handed pitcher Ty Dennison (Hudson, OH / Hudson) dominated, pitching 7.0 innings of work with four strikeouts, allowing only four hits and two earned runs.
Key performers for Mount Union include junior Trevor Szekely (Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest), who went 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, and three RBIs in a strong game one. Senior outfielder Chris Tsouras (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor) went 2-for-2 with three walks and two RBIs. The Purple Raiders scored nine runs between the first two innings.
Junior outfielder Brycen Fox (Hamilton, OH / Badin) had another strong performance, going 2-for-4 with a double and scoring three runs. Senior second baseman Aidan Schroeder (Pittsburgh, PA / Keystone Oaks) also hit a double, making them the two Purple Raiders with extra-base hits, aside from Szekely's home run.
The game concluded after the seventh inning, with Mount Union winning 15-4. Dennison secured his team-high fifth win of the season.
In game two, the Purple Raiders' offense was relentless. They scored five runs in the first two innings, starting with a three-run home run from junior third baseman Drew Denham (Alliance, OH / Marlington) in the first inning. Denham had an outstanding game, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Other key performers for the Purple Raiders in game two included sophomore shortstop Daniel Tome III (Cleveland, OH / St. Edwards), who went 3-for-5 at the plate, adding a walk, a steal, and two RBIs. Tsouras played well, going 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs. Fox also played well, walking twice and stealing two bases.
Additionally, sophomore first baseman Aaron Tucker (Alliance, OH / West Branch) delivered a crucial two-RBI single in the seventh inning, helping to extend the Mount Union lead to 12-8 in a game that had been closely contested through the first six innings.
Denham hit a grand slam to left field in the eighth inning to help put the game away, while Szekely hit his second home run of the day with a solo shot to right field.
Christopher Maurer (Hudson, OH / Hudson) dominated out of the bullpen, pitching 5.1 innings, striking out three batters, and allowing only six hits and two earned runs, which helped secure a 19-8 victory for the Purple Raiders, as the game concluded after the eighth inning.
Mount Union's next game is scheduled for Wednesday against Baldwin Wallace in an OAC doubleheader, with the first game starting at 1:00 PM.
