BEREA, Ohio- In a battle of last year's OAC Championship game Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace 82-75 in Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders improve to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the OAC while the loss drops Baldwin Wallace to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the OAC.
Mount Union was led by junior Logan Hill (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) with a career-high 18 points and senior Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
Baldwin Wallace was led by Michael Quiring with 30 points.
Mount Union and Baldwin Wallace started off the contest tied at three until a 13-2 run by the Raiders pushed the lead to 16-5 with 11:44 left in the first half. The Raiders pushed the lead out to 30-15, their largest of the game, when senior D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Heights) stole the ball and finished with a dunk. Hill led Mount Union in scoring in the first half with nine points and the Raiders held a 40-35 advantage at the half.
Mount Union and Baldwin Wallace battled in the second half with neither team leading by more than seven. Baldwin Wallace took its first lead with 12:07 left when Drew Sova sank two free throws but that was short lived when Hill came back with two free throws of his own to regain the lead with 11:53 left. The rest of the game saw eight lead changes and three ties.
The Raiders kept the lead for good when Friga finished an and-one which started an 8-0 run with sophomore Braedon Poole (McDonald) hitting a three and freshman Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Marys) hitting two free throws with 4:30 remaining in the game.
Mount Union returns home to face OAC opponent Capital Saturday Jan. 11 at 2 p.m.
