AKRON, Ohio – The Mount Union men's swimming and diving team sits in second place with a score of 223 after day one of the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships held at the University of Akron.
Leading the Purple Raiders were senior Cole Ellsworth (Temperance, Mich. / Bedford) and sophomore Brett Scheib (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton) who took first place and second in the 500-yard freestyle, both earned All-OAC honors while both their times (4:34.59 and 4:35.93) bested a school record that stood for 33 years from Sean Malottke of 4:36.89.
For the first time since 2004, Mount Union grabbed first place in 50-yard freestyle as freshman Jason Tondra (Canton / Massillon Jackson) swam a 20.88 earning him All-OAC honors.
Freshman Nathan Williams (Columbia, S.C. / Irmo) was named All-OAC after his second place finish in the 200-yard IM clocking a time of 1:53.58.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Logan Palochak (Hopewell, Pa. / Hopewell), Williams, junior Mark Silver (Painesville / Riverside) and Tondra also received All-OAC with their second place finish with a time of 1:24.81.
Freshman Charles Marshall (Painesville / Riverside), sophomore Nick Dye (Massillon / Massillon Jackson), Palochak, and Tondra took second place in the 400-yard medley relay, grabbing All-OAC honors, swimming a 3:25.42.
Day two of the OAC Championships continue tomorrow Friday, Feb. 14 with preliminaries starting 10 a.m.
