MARIETTA, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's indoor track and field team, ranked No. 6 in the nation, leads after day one of the 2016 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Marietta College.
After the five events scored on day one, Mount Union has 41 points which is nine points ahead of second place Ohio Northern. John Carroll, Otterbein and Baldwin Wallace make up the rest of the top five with 26, 24 and 22 points respectively.
Headlining the day for the Purple Raiders was senior Tyler Orewiler (Bucyrus / Colonel Crawford) who set a new conference record at 17-feet, 1-inch to win the title in the pole vault.
Mount Union also got a second place finish from sophomore Brandon Cloud (Bedford / Bedford) in the long jump (22-1) and a third place finish from senior Tyler Shumate (Wapakoneta / Spencerville) in the weight throw (54-4).
The top three finishes in each event earn All-OAC honors.
A pair of freshman -- Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) in the 55 meter dash (6.52) and Clark Etzler (Elida/Elida) in the 500 meters (1:07.28) along with Tyler Neff (Navarre/Fairless) in the 400 meters (50.75) -- each ran the best times in the preliminaries for each event.
Neff was also fourth in the 200 meter prelims (22.62) while Darrell Sullins (Beachwood/Beachwood) ran the second fastest time in the prelims for the 55 meter hurdles (8.03).
The meet concludes Saturday afternoon.
