PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Mount Union's women's volleyball team won a pair of matches Saturday to go 3-1 for the weekend at the Carnegie Mellon Doubletree Invitational in Pittsburgh.
Mount Union is now 11-3 overall on the season after sweeping Scranton (Pa.), 3-0 then beat Susquehanna (Pa.), 3-2.
In a three-set win against Scranton (Pa.) (5-5) (25-14, 25-21, 25-14). Juniors Madelin DiBease (Perry) and Breanna Arnett (Peninsula / Woodridge) both recorded nine kills to lead the Purple Raiders to victory. Also contributing offensively was freshman Mollie Thomas (Massillon) with 15 assists while freshman Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) defended Mount Union territory with 12 digs and senior Bethany Matuska (Pickerington / Bishop Hartley) had three blocks.
Against Susquehanna (Pa.) (9-2), Mount Union took the first set 25-16. The River Hawks bounced back taking an early 11-7 lead and added a 7-2 run to make the score 18-9. Although the Raiders fought back, they couldn't regain the lead, losing the second set 25-18. With three ties, Mount Union never let the River Hawks take the lead winning the third set 27-25. The fourth set remained close until the very end. The set had 18 ties, the last being a score of 25-25. Susquehanna scored the last two points, winning 27-25. Once again, the fifth set was back and forth as the Raiders started off the set with a 10-3 run. The River Hawks fought back tying the set up at 16-16. Mount Union would go on to get the next two points winning the set 18-16 and the match.
Leading the Raiders once again was DiBease with 17 kills. Freshman Katie May (Independence) recorded a career-high 32 assists and May was not the only Raider with a career-high this match as Kasaris tallied 30 digs.
Mount Union continues play next weekend at the Susquehanna Invitational in Sellingsgrove, Pa.
