Men's Soccer Knocks off First Place Ohio Northern in Double Overtime

(ALLIANCE, OH)--Sophomore Matt McCain (Homeworth/West Branch) scored a goal in double overtime to lift the Mount Union College men's soccer team to a 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference win over Ohio Northern University Saturday night at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.

It was the Purple Raiders first OAC win of the season making them 6-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference.  The Polar Bears, who entered the match unbeaten in conference play, fall to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

Mount Union outshot Ohio Northern 8-6 in the first half, while the Polar Bears held an 8-6 edge in the second half.  Both teams also had chances in the first extra session, but McCain's shot in the second overtime was the lone shot for the period.

Junior keeper Bobby Petras (Columbia Station/Columbia) kept the Raiders in the match stopping five shots on his way to his fourth shutout of the season.

Mount Union is back on the road as they play an OAC match at Otterbein College Tuesday (Oct. 13) at 4 p.m. in Westerville, Ohio.
