(ALLIANCE, OH)—A second half rally by the Mount Union
College men's soccer team fell short in a 2-1 loss to Muskingum
College in an Ohio Athletic Conference match Wednesday night at
Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders drop to 6-9-1 overall and 1-5 in the
OAC, while Muskingum moves to 5-9-1 overall and
2-3-1 in the OAC.
Down 2-0 in the second half Mount Union sophomore Korey Smerk
(Brook Park/Midpark) sparked a rally scoring on a penalty kick in
the 62nd minute to make it 2-1. The Purple Raiders outshot
the Muskies 13-3 in the second half including a free kick that went
off the post in the game's final minutes.
Muskingum started the scoring in the 15th minute when
Paul Lafyatis split defenders and drove it pass Mount Union junior
goal keeper Bobby Petras (Columbia Station/Columbia). Three
minutes later the Fighting Muskies added to their total when Ian
Stipes squeaked it by a diving Petras from 30 yards out.
Mount Union next plays Saturday at 3 p.m. against OAC-rival
