NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.-Mount Union College's volleyball team beat host Westminster (Pa.) College 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 26-24) and Penn State-Behrend 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-14) to win the Volley Against Violence Tournament in New Wilmington, Pa.
The Purple Raiders were on the offensive on Saturday as junior Melissa Mahnke (North Royalton/North Royalton) hit .444 with 16 kills, while sophomore Roni Schroeder (Shelby/Shelby) hit .400 with 10 kills against Westminster.
Then against Penn State-Behrend, sophomore Monica Hupertz (Willoughby Hills/Beaumont) hit an impressive .611 with 11 kills on 18 attempts with no errors and Mahnke had nine kills in 19 attempts with just one error. Each of them also contributed 10 digs in the win.
Other top performances for Mount Union included freshman Julie Radigan (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) totalled 70 kills on the day and sophomore Sarah Dean (Strongsville/Walsh Jesuit) had 10 digs against Westminster.
Mahnke along with junior defensive specialist Nicole Baka (Streetsboro/Streetsboro) were both named to the All-Tournament team.
With the tournament victory, Mount Union now stands at 11-1 on the season and will open Ohio Athletic Conference play against Heidelberg College Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.
