Chris Switzer (Euclid/Stow-Munroe Falls) matched his career-high
with a game-high 30 points, Jay Mathis
(Tallmadge/Tallmadge) had 15 points while Luke Conley
(Louisville/Louisville) and Dave Pellerite (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted
Falls) each had 13 points to lead the Purple Raiders who
dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season and stand
at 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the OAC.
Rudy Kirbus scored six of his team-high 22 points in overtime to
lead four Blue Streaks in double figures as they move to 7-4
overall and 3-2 in the OAC.
The first half saw eight lead changes and John Carroll took
control late in the period to lead by as many as 11 points, 42-31
at the 2:39 mark, before taking a 42-35 lead into the half.
There were 10 lead changes in the second half with Mount Union
taking its largest lead of the game, 74-68, as Pellerite hit a
pair of free throws with 4:56 left in regulation.
Pellerite also scored the first bucket of the overtime to give
Mount Union an 80-78 lead before the Blue Streaks went on an 8-2
run sparked by Kirbus. Kirbus was fouled on a three-point
attempt in which he sank all three free throws, then he closed the
run with a layup and free throw to give John Carroll the lead for
good at 86-82.
The Purple Raiders next game brings them back to Timken
Gymnasium as they host nationally ranked Capital University next
Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in an OAC matchup.
