Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker To Wilmington On Senior Day

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Mount Union men's soccer team drops a heartbreaker on senior day, falling to Wilmington, 3-2 in overtime in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.

The Raiders (7-7-1, 0-5 OAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the game's first nine minutes.

Freshman Joey Merlo (Niles/Cardinal Mooney) scored with a header off a cross from senior Andrew Coccia (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) in the fourth minute and T.J. Welch (Columbia Station/Columbia) added the second goal off a feed from Korey Smerk (Brook Park/Midpark) at the 8:38 mark.

Mount Union took a 2-0 lead at the half and held that lead late into the second half when Wilmington struck back.

Nick Kinder (Liberty Township/Lakota East) scored on an assist from Darin Hinkle in the 78th minute, then with 1:44 left in regulation Daniel Givens sent a free kick into the box that Zach Owsley redirected to tie the game.

Kinder struck again with the game-winner just 3:53 into overtime to complete the comeback and give Wilmington (4-10, 1-4 OAC) the win.

Mount Union goes on the road for the final four games of the season starting Tuesday at 4 pm at Muskingum in New Concord, Ohio.
