The win kept the Purple Raiders a perfect 5-0 at home on the
season as Mount Union now stands at 5-3 overall and tied in second
place early in the OAC season at 3-1.
Ohio Northern fell to 4-4 overall and is in that 3-1 logjam in
second place in the OAC.
Sophomore guard Ben Hodkinson (Tippecanoe/Harrison Central) was the
only other Mount Union player in double digits with 14.
Scott Schnelle had 20 points and Kyle Meyer had 15 points and 11
rebounds to lead Ohio Northern.
A Wier layup at the 6:44 mark of the first half gave Mount Union
its largest lead of the first half at 22-10, but Northern would go
on a 14-0 run to retake the lead 24-22 with 36 seconds left in the
half. Sam King (Masury/Brookfield) would hit a three-pointer
with five seconds left in the half to give Mount Union a 25-24 lead
at the half.
Mount Union would open the second half on a 7-0 run and a Wier
jumper gave the Raiders a 32-24 lead with 17 minutes to go.
The Raiders would keep the Polar Bears an arm's length away for the
next 12 minutes and a pair of Ezra Bradshaw free throws would give
Northern back the lead at 52-50 with 5:12 to go.
Wier hit a three-pointer to give the Raiders back the lead and the
score would be tied two more times, the last of those after a
Bradshaw layup made it 58-58 with 1:57 left.
Northern would not score again and Mount Union would get a jumper
from Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) and a pair of free
throws by Dave Pellerite (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) and
Hodkinson to put the game away.
Mount Union takes next week off for finals and returns to action a
week from today at 3 pm at Heidelberg in Tiffin.
