Sophomore forward Amanda Rose (Uniontown/Green) scored a
game-high 17 points, juniors in forward Lauren Forquer (North
Canton/Green) and guard Katie Crider (Brunswick/Brunswick) each had
12 points, while senior guard Tessa Pohovey (Strasburg/Tusky
Valley) had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Purple
Raiders.
Lisa Button came off the bench with 11 points as the only player in
double digits for Alfred (5-3).
Mount Union scored the game's first 11 points and took its largest
lead at 14-2 after Crider nailed a three-pointer with 16:14 left in
the first half.
Alfred rallied with an 18-7 run over the next minutes to close the
gap to a point, 21-20. The Raiders would take the lead back
out to eight, before another Alfred surge made the score 35-32 at
the break.
Alfred got within a point, 35-34 in the opening minutes of the
second half, but a Rose layup and five straight points by Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) would take the lead back out to
eight, 42-34. The Raiders would convert only 9-of-34 shots
but out-rebounded the Saxons by nine in the second half to keep
them an arms length away for the win.
Mount Union plays Nazareth (NY) Wednesday at 1 pm in the second day
of the Waynesburg Invite. The game will be broadcast LIVE on
the Internet at www.muc.edu/athletics starting at 12:50 pm.
