Sophomore forward Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the first half, fellow sophomore guard Ben Hodkinson (Tippecanoe/Harrison Central) scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half and junior forward Dave Pellerite (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) had 11 to lead the Purple Raiders as they now stand at 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
Matt Crozier had 13 points and Maurice Haynes had 10 to lead a John Carroll team that was held to its lowest point total of the season and is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
Wood scored 10 of his points in the first six minutes and allowed the Raiders to run out to a 15-9 lead to start the game.
Hodkinson would hit a three pointer two minutes later to keep the lead at six, 18-12, before John Carroll scored four of the next five points to tie the game at 19-19 with 9:23 left in the half.
The game was tied again at 23 when Crozier hit a layup with 4:31 left that allowed John Carroll to retake the lead and the Blue Streaks took a 30-27 lead into the lockers.
Crozier would hit a pair of layups to start the second half and extend the John Carroll lead to 34-27, but a Pellerite three-pointer would spark a 6-1 run that gave Mount Union back the lead 36-35 with 15:43 left.
The game would go back and forth with 11 lead changes and four ties until a Crozier layup tied the game at 55 with 4:56 to play.
Back to back three pointers by Sam King (Masury/Brookfield) and Hodkinson made the score 61-55 with 1:34 left and gave the Raiders the lead. Hodkinson and Pellerite combined to go 6-for-6 from the line in the final 40 seconds to put the game away.
Mount Union converted 13-of-27 second half shots (48.1-percent) and for the game out-rebounded the Blue Streaks 44-43 while making 11-of-15 from the line as John Carroll was just 12-of-23 from the stripe and 6-of-26 from beyond the arc.
The Raiders put their four-game home court win streak on the line Saturday against Ohio Northern at 4 pm at The McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
