The loss spoiled a brilliant effort by Mount Union (11-12, 5-10
OAC) senior Chris Switzer (Euclid/Stow-Munroe Falls) had
game-high and career-best 31 point performance. The Raiders
also got a double-double from sophomore Dave Pellerite (Olmsted
Falls/Olmsted Falls) as he had 17 points and 11 rebounds while
seniors Jay Mathis (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) and Luke Conley
(Louisville/Louisville) each had 16 and 12 respectively.
Wilmington (15-8, 11-5 OAC) had six players in
double figures led by Kevin Colson who tallied 18
points.
There were five lead changes in the first half and the Quakers
held a 21-20 edge on a Nate Helton layup with 9:24 left in the
period. Mount Union responded as Switzer nailed back-to-back
three pointers to spark a 15-6 run and give the Raiders their
largest lead of the half, 36-26 at the six minute mark and
Wilmington would battle back to within five, 43-38 at the
break.
The Quakers rallied in the second half to retake the lead,
56-55, with just under 14 minutes to play on a pair of Kerry
Wilkinson free throws. The Raiders came right back and over
the next six minutes took their largest lead of the game,
73-62 on the strength of an 18-6 surge. Mount Union
held an 80-71 lead with 4:25 to play when the Quakers went on an
11-2 run to tie the game at 82 with 1:27 in regulation.
Justin Gaines hit a layup to give Wilmington an 84-82 lead,
but Mathis came right back and hit a shot to send the game to
overtime.
Both teams traded baskets to start the extra session and then
Gaines hit a pair of shots to take the score to 90-86 which gave
Wilmington the lead for good as they went on to the 98-94
win.
Mount Union plays its final road regular season game Wednesday
at 7:30 p.m. at Marietta College.
