The loss leaves Mount Union at 12-7 overall and 7-6 in the OAC,
while John Carroll evens its record at 10-10 and 5-8 in the
OAC.
Lee Jennings had 15 of her game-high 20 points to lead John
Carroll, while Caitlin Sureck had 18 points and 12 rebounds along
with 16 points from Rachel Price for the Blue Streaks.
Two players stepped up off the Mount Union bench to have career
nights as Lauren Forquer (North Canton/Green) had 19 points and
Nancy Faulhaber (Parma/Holy Name) had 13 points to pace the
Raiders.
Tessa Pohovey (Strasburg/Tusky Valley) and Kori Wiedt (North
Olmsted/North Olmsted) each also had 10 points as the other double
digit scorers for Mount Union.
The Raiders controlled the game early as a Pohovey layup with 11:28
left in the first half gave Mount Union a 19-11 lead. The
Blue Streaks would streak back with a 12-3 run to take a 23-22 lead
with 7:51 remaining in the period. Mount Union would briefly
retake the lead 34-32 but a Price layup at the buzzer tied the game
at 34 at the break.
Mount Union would again jump out to a lead early in the second half
as a Katie Crider (Brunswick/Brunswick) three-pointer with 14:43
left would take the lead back out to seven, 49-42. Again John
Carroll would respond this time with a 15-7 surge to take a 57-56
edge on a pair of Jennings free throws with just over eight minutes
remaining. The teams would trade the lead six times over the
next four minutes until a Sureck layup with just under five minutes
left ended up giving the Blue Streaks the lead for good.
The Raiders would get back to within a point, 70-69 with three
minutes left on a Wiedt three-pointer but Price would hit a layup
and a free throw on the next possession to take the lead back out
to four points and John Carroll would go on to the victory.
Mount Union returns home Saturday at 3 p.m. to take on Otterbein
College on a game that will be broadcast on television via tape
delay on WIVN Ch. 52 (Canton) and SportsTime Ohio.
