Mount Union falls to 6-11 overall, 4-6 in the OAC, and was led
by junior Ben Hodkinson (Tippecanoe/Harrison Central) with 13
points.
Senior Sam King (Masury/Brookfield) added 12 points, while junior
Matt Wier (New Castle, PA/Mohawk), sophomore Jimmy Wood
(Wintersville/Indian Creek), and freshman Matt Kiger (Williamstown,
Williamstown, WV) each chipped in 10 points.
Josh Calver had a game-high 17 points to pace a Heidelberg squad
that remains in a tie for second in the OAC at 11-6 overall and 7-3
in the OAC.
In the first half, Heidelberg led at the 12:32 as Andy Emrhein
nailed a jumper to put the score at 16-10. The Student
Princes would eventually stretch that lead to 11 points as Dane
Givner hit a mid-range jumper at the 5:06 mark to put the score at
30-19.
The Purple Raiders would claw their way back on a pair of Matt
Kiger free throws at the buzzer, which would leave the score at
38-35 heading into halftime.
The Raiders would shrink the margin to one point at 53-52 in the
second half on a pair of free throws from Matt Weir at the 9:30
mark. The Raiders would eventually tie the ball game twice at
54 and 58 respectively but could not gain the lead as Heidelberg
went on a 14-5 run capped off by a made free throw from Jim Smalley
with 2:12 left in regulation to secure the lead and cruised to the
76-70 win.
Mount Union next plays Wednesday (Jan. 27) at 7:30 pm at Marietta
before returning home next Saturday (Jan. 30) at 3 pm against
Wilmington.
