Box Score ADA, Ohio -- The Mount Union volleyball team suffered a tough
loss at No. 22 Ohio Northern on Saturday, nearly climbing back from
a 2-0 deficit before falling, 3-2, in an Ohio Athletic Conference
matchup. The defeat snapped the Purple Raiders' 11-match winning
streak.
The Purple Raiders were one point away from victory, leading
14-13 in the fifth set, but the hosts stormed back with three
points for a 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 16-14 decision.
Monica
Hupertz (Willoughby Hills/Beaumont) led the Raider attack,
finishing with 17 kills. Roni Schroeder
(Shelby/Shelby) had 13 kills and four total blocks while Taylor Webb
(Geneva/Geneva) and Leah Hirsch
(Frankfort/Adena) contributed 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Julie
Radigan (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) made 49 assists for Mount
Union and Sarah
Dean (Strongsville/Walsh Jesuit) had 42 digs. Kristen Gromes
(Navarre/Fairless) came through with 30 digs for the visitors.
For the Polar Bears (12-9, 2-0), Alex Christian smashed 20
kills. Kelly Smerekanich added 54 assists and Kasey Roeser finished
with 47 digs.
Mount Union (12-5, 2-1) will be back in action next weekend at
the Washington Bears (Mo.) Classic. Opponents include Webster
(Mo.), Westminster (Mo.), Dallas (Texas) and the host -- defending
national champion Washington (Mo.)
