Purple Raider Volleyball Headed to OAC Semifinals

Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's volleyball team is headed to its seventh straight Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal after its 3-0 sweep of Baldwin-Wallace on Tuesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. The fourth-seed Purple Raiders won the quarterfinal by gaining a 25-15, 25-18, 25-10 decision over the No. 5 Yellow Jackets.

Monica Hupertz (Willoughby Hills/Beaumont) led the Raider attack with 15 kills while Roni Schroeder (Shelby/Shelby) put down 10. Julie Radigan (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) added 39 assists to the Mount Union offense.

On the defensive side, Sarah Dean (Strongsville/Walsh Jesuit) made 25 digs to build upon her all-time career mark -- she now has 2,423 -- while also setting a new single-season mark.  Now with 762 digs, Dean broke the previous record by Kristen Sagula, who had 740 in 2003.

Also for the Raiders, Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) had 15 digs while Hupertz and Leah Hirsch (Frankfort/Adena) made three total blocks.

For Baldwin-Wallace (20-13), Colleen Bonacci recorded six kills while Casey Passen finished with 17 digs and 10 assists.

With the victory, the Raiders (21-10) advanced to a semifinal matchup against OAC regular season champ Heidelberg (30-5). The teams will meet Friday in Tiffin at 7 p.m. That match will be preceded by the other OAC semifinal between second-seed Otterbein (26-5) and third-seed Ohio Northern (18-11).
