The win kept the Purple Raiders, 18-3 overall and 11-3 OAC, in
third place in the OAC and a game behind first place co-leaders
Capital and Baldwin-Wallace (12-2). Mount Union next plays at
Baldwin-Wallace Wednesday (Feb. 10) at 7:30 pm.
Mount Union also swept the season series from the Polar Bears, who
are now 13-8 overall and are in fourth place in the OAC at 8-6,
three games behind the Raiders.
The Raiders jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the game's opening
five minutes. Mount Union then went cold making just 2-of-18
shots over the next 12 minutes and the Polar Bears took advantage
as they took an eight-point lead, 23-15 with two minutes left in
the half.
Mount Union then got hot as they scored eight straight points
capped by a Chanel Simpson (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) runner at the
halftime buzzer to tie the game at 23 at the break.
Tessa Pohovey (Strasburg/Tusky Valley) nailed a three-pointer to
start the second half to complete the 11-0 surge and give Mount
Union back the lead. The Raiders kept the lead the rest of
the way as they forced 12 Ohio Northern turnovers in the second
half to seal the victory.
Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) had 11 points and Pohovey poured
in 10 to lead Mount Union.
