Carnegie Mellon Sinks Mount Union Men With PK

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Mount Union's men's soccer team pushed Division III's 11th-ranked team to the limit, but a late penalty kick prevented the Purple Raiders' upset cause in a 3-2 defeat against Carnegie Mellon.

Max Betzig converted the game-winner in the 86th minute, beating Mount Union goalkeeper Jon Critell (Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney) on the PK, and lifted the hosts in the first round of their own Radisson Invitational.

Anthony Grenga (Canfield/Boardman) scored two goals -- both on assists from Leo Hicks (Leetonia/Cardinal Mooney) -- for the Purple Raiders (0-2). In the 63rd minute, he tied the score at 2-all with a free-kick equalizer.

Grenga helped Mount Union take the first lead, finishing off Hicks's corner kick during the second minute.

Down 1-0, the host Tartans struck back in the seventh minute when Alex Abedian finished a rebound in the 18-yard box; credit Betzig with an assist.

Brad Edelman gave Carnegie Mellon (2-0) its first lead in the 58th minute with an assist from Matt Sarett.

In goal, Critell stopped six shots for the Raiders while his counterpart, Zach Stahl, made one save for Carnegie Mellon.
