Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Mount Union's men's soccer team pushed
Division III's 11th-ranked team to the limit, but a late penalty
kick prevented the Purple Raiders' upset cause in a 3-2 defeat
against Carnegie Mellon.
Max Betzig converted the game-winner in the 86th minute, beating
Mount Union goalkeeper Jon Critell
(Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney) on the PK, and lifted the hosts in the
first round of their own Radisson Invitational.
Anthony Grenga (Canfield/Boardman) scored two goals -- both on
assists from Leo Hicks (Leetonia/Cardinal Mooney) -- for the Purple
Raiders (0-2). In the 63rd minute, he tied the score at 2-all with
a free-kick equalizer.
Grenga helped Mount Union take the first lead, finishing off
Hicks's corner kick during the second minute.
Down 1-0, the host Tartans struck back in the seventh minute
when Alex Abedian finished a rebound in the 18-yard box; credit
Betzig with an assist.
Brad Edelman gave Carnegie Mellon (2-0) its first lead in the
58th minute with an assist from Matt Sarett.
In goal, Critell stopped six shots for the Raiders while his
counterpart, Zach Stahl, made one save for Carnegie Mellon.
Mount Union will resume action at the classic on Sunday with a
noon match against Wittenberg.
