Griffin's Hot Shooting Earns MVP Honors as Men's Basketball Defeats Geneva (Pa.)

BEAVER FALLS, Pa.—The Mount Union men's basketball team got earned a 63-47 win over host Geneva (Pa.) in their second game at the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament. The win puts the Purple Raiders (2-1) over .500 for the first time since beginning the 2009-10 season 5-3.

Freshman Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and junior Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W. Va./Williamstown) combined for 24 points off the bench in the opening 20 minutes as the Raiders raced out to a 36-21 halftime lead.

The Golden Tornadoes began the second half with a 14-4 run to pull within five points of the Raiders, but they would not get any closer. Mount Union responded by tightening up its defense and allowed Geneva to score just 12 points in the final 12:39 of the contest.

Led by Griffin and Kiger, the Raiders' bench outscored Geneva's 35-12. Griffin made six three-pointers and led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. Kiger scored 11 points and added five rebounds in just 15 minutes of action for the Raiders. Senior Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) rounded out the Raiders in double-figures with 12 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Junior Matt Lorello, who scored 19 points to go with a game-high seven rebounds, was the only Geneva player in double-figures. The Golden Tornadoes shot just 12-of-37 from the field (32.4%) and just 2-of-16 from behind the three-point line (12.5%).

Mount Union held a 36-27 advantage on the glass and a 15-3 advantage in second-chance points. The Raiders converted Geneva's 24 turnovers into 31 points and received 35 points off the bench. The Golden Tornadoes attempted 31 free throws while the Raiders attempted just nine.

Griffin was named Tournament Most Valuable Player and was joined by Wood on the All-Tournament Team.

Mount Union will make a return to the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance when they host Westminster (Pa.) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
