Box Score UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio -- No. 7 seed Mount Union rallied from a 15-point deficit and took the lead with less three minutes to play but No. 2 seed John Carroll held on for a 75-68 win in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday in Cleveland.
Junior forward Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) hit a layup, was fouled and hit a free throw to give Mount Union, which was down 21-6 to open the game, a 66-65 lead with 2:36 to play.
The foul on the play was the fifth on John Carroll forward Maurice Haynes, who had a team-high 18 points and six rebounds, but juniors Michael Hartnett and Corey Shontz came to the rescue for the Blue Streaks.
Hartnett hit a pair of free throws to give the Streaks back the lead, 67-66, then after Mount Union retied the game at 67, Shontz drove the length of the floor and made a layup to make it 69-67.
After a missed Mount Union layup, Hartnett put the game away with his first three-pointer of the game and extended the lead to 72-67 with 46 seconds to play.
John Carroll (18-8) would end up finishing the game on a 10-2 run to advance to the semifinals where it will host No. 3 seed Capital, 76-47 winners over No. 6 seed Otterbein, Thursday at 7:30 pm.
Wood posted his first double-double of the season with a season-best 26 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the Purple Raiders that end up with a 10-16 record.
