ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The Mount Union volleyball team completed their weekend trip by splitting their final two matches at the Golden Flyer Invitational on Saturday. The Purple Raiders (7-2) defeated host Nazareth (N.Y.) and fell to Cortland State (N.Y.) to finish in second place.
The Purple Raiders opened the day against Nazareth (4-4) and defeated the Golden Flyers in straight sets, 25-21, 25-19, 25-12. Mount Union had a hitting percentage of .382 while Nazareth's was just .089. They were not as accurate on serves, however, and committed nine service errors for the match.
In the finale, Mount Union was defeated in straight sets by unbeaten Cortland State (7-0), 25-23, 25-18, 25-22. The Raiders displayed good defense at the net with 22.5 blocks for the match. Unfortunately, they struggled with their accuracy and committed eight more service errors.
All-tournament selections Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) and Julie Radigan (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) had strong performances for Mount Union. Webb led the team with 26 kills while Radigan contributed 59 assists, 11 digs, and six kills.
Deanna Glass (Medina/Medina) had 12 kills and 12 total blocks on the day. Maya Brown (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) added eight kills. Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) led the Purple Raiders with 20 digs.
The Mount Union volleyball team returns to action Tuesday when they play host to Malone. The match is scheduled for 7 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
