Griffin Leads Men's Basketball in Comeback Win at B-W

Box Score

BEREA, Ohio—The Mount Union men's basketball team picked up its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference win on the road by defeating Baldwin-Wallace, 49-47, Wednesday night. Freshman Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) provided the go-ahead points for the second consecutive game when he made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining.

The Purple Raiders (6-8, 2-5) were unable to find a rhythm on offense in the first half and trailed Baldwin-Wallace 26-17 at halftime. The Raiders made just five of 23 field goal attempts and were outrebounded 26-9 in the half.

Trailing 40-30 with 7:43 to play, Mount Union went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to two. A pair of free throws by Griffin with 3:16 remaining gave the Raiders their first lead of the night at 44-43. After each team traded baskets, Tyler Ferrell split a pair of free throws for the Yellow Jackets with 53 seconds left to tie the score at 46-46.

Following a Mount Union timeout, senior Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) missed a jumper, but Griffin was there to gather the rebound and draw a foul on the putback attempt. The freshman calmly sank the pair to give the Raiders the lead. Baldwin-Wallace split a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one with 13 seconds to play. Junior Justen Little (Galion/Galion) also split a pair of free throws with four seconds left, but the Yellow Jackets saw their desperation shot glance off the rim as time expired.

Griffin scored a game-high 14 points for Mount Union. He scored 11 of his points in the second half. Wood scored 13 points and freshman Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) added 10 points.

Tyler Ferrell and Kevin Krakowiak paced Baldwin-Wallace (8-6, 3-4) with 12 points apiece. Ferrell also grabbed nine rebounds and Ben Umbel added eight rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, who owned a 41-20 edge on the glass.

Mount Union returns to action on Saturday when they host Heidelberg at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance. The game is scheduled for 3 pm and is the first home game of the New Year for the Raiders.
